Is There Uber In The Bahamas In 2024? No > 8 Alternatives

There is currently no Uber in the Bahamas because there is a very strong taxi drivers’ Union in the country. The concern is that ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft would take jobs away from officially licensed and unionized taxi drivers. Not having Uber available is a pain point for travelers on the island – Instead of ride-hailing apps, the most common way to get around is via traditional taxis. Here’s a quick guide on how to get around the islands.

8 Ways to Get Around in the Bahamas

1. Taking Taxis

Taxis in the Bahamas are readily available for tourists. According to the law in the Bahamas, taxis are supposed to have meters set at around $1.60 per mile + $3 charge, but you’re never going to find a taxi driver willing to put it on! Instead, taxis usually operate with a flat-rate system. For example, if you’re taking a taxi from the airport in Nassau to Atlantis or Paradise Island, it will be around $50 each way. 

👉 Note: Taxis in the Bahamas have a bad reputation for being dirty, and taxi drivers can be kinda rude. Taxis in the Bahamas are not held to a rating system like Uber is, so the experience isn’t as nice. 

2. Airport Transfers

The resorts in the Bahamas do not usually provide free airport shuttle service – In fact, resort shuttles often cost more! I recommend pre-arranging your airport shuttle ahead of time for the same rate (or cheaper) than taxis found at the airport.

3. Ride-Hailing Apps in the Bahamas

There are some small ride-hailing companies that have sprung up in the absence of Uber, but there is currently no reliable taxi app in the Bahamas. You can use Let’s Go Bahamas, Bahrezy, and Bahamas Ride – But the only one I’m able to even find on the app store is Bahamas Ride which operates through the “My Ride” app.  These ride-hailing services aren’t comprehensive like Uber or Lyft are in other countries, and I wouldn’t recommend depending on them for transportation. 

4. Nassau Public Transportation: Jitney Buses

The most common mode of public transportation on the Island of Nassau is the Jitney Buses. The Jitney is the most inexpensive form of transportation on Nassau, it’s charged by distance so most routes are between $1-$3 per trip. The Jitney buses don’t have set schedules or timetables, if you see one you just wave your hand to get it to stop. If the bus doesn’t stop for you, it’s likely just because there was no room left and then you have to wait for the next one. 

👉 Note: Because Jitneys aren’t very reliable, most tourists don’t use them. 

💡 Tip: Jitneys operate only during work hours – usually from around 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM, so don’t depend on the Nassau Jitney for late-night transportation! 

5. Getting Around by Taking Tours 

While a lot of visitors to the famous island of Nassau go straight to their resort, there are a ton of cool things to do in and around Nassau that are worth visiting! The easiest way to see the sights in Nassau is by taking guided tours. It’s also usually cheaper to use tours to do excursions in the Bahamas because the overall price includes transportation, entrance fees, and usually a meal. 6. Renting a Car

If you plan on going off the beaten path, visiting lots of lesser-touristed spots, or just want to go to a variety of different places on the islands then renting a car and driving yourself is a great option, but really make sure if it’s worth it to you! If you only plan on exploring the island for one day, and you’re in the Bahamas for 4 days, there’s no need to rent a car for all 4-days.

7. Inter-Island Travel: Via Plane

Taking small planes is the best way to travel between islands in the Bahamas if you want to island-hop, but most tourists choose not to. The reason for this is even though the islands that make up the country of the Bahamas are geographically close together, it’s still difficult and costly to travel between them. 

8. Inter-Island Travel: Water Taxi

Water Taxis are an iconic mode of transportation in the Bahamas, most frequently used to go between Paradise Island (where the Atlantis Resort is located) and the Nassau mainland, but they’re not as reliable as ground transfer options. I would always recommend renting a car and driving, or using regular taxis in the Bahamas instead of relying on water taxis – but some tourists think they’re a fun activity!
