All About Jodipan, The Colorful Rainbow Village In Malang
Malang’s Rainbow Village, also called Jodipan and Kampung Warna-Warni (Indonesian for “Village-of-Color”), was a slum in Malang city center on the verge of being given up on when 8 students from Muhammadiyah Malang University had the genius idea of increasing the economy of the area through tourism. Their idea worked, and today Jodipan’s “Village-of-Color” attracts thousands of tourists on the weekends and has inspired the neighboring villages to emulate its success through massive wall-to-wall paint jobs.

On the verge of being condemned and destroyed by the government; a slum in Malang had the genius idea to paint their town candy colors in a bid to attract tourism. Now, a few years later, the Rainbow Village is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.

How to Get to Jodipan
We asked the taxi drivers outside the Malang train station how to get to the Rainbow Village and they said it was an hour away by taxi! That didn’t sound right so we checked Google – The Rainbow Village is about a 10-minute walk from the train station when you arrive in Malang.
Do You Need a Tour to Visit the Rainbow Village?
No! Malang’s Rainbow Village is located in the town center and is walkable from the train station, it’s safe and easily accessible without a tour. The main attraction to tourists is the photo opportunities, so some people hire guides/photographers to come with them to take their photos.
About The Different Rainbow Villages In Malang
Although it is known to tourists as “The Rainbow Village”, Kampung Warna-Warni is made up of several different communities that all charge their own admission.A brand new lemon-yellow bridge connects multiple villages in the area that have recently opened for tourism.
The village across the bridge from the entrance is called Kampung Tridi (3D Village), it looks identical to Kampung Warna-Warni but is famous for its 3-D murals. Next to Kampung Tridi is the newest installation, Kampung Biru Arema (Arema Blue Village), which was painted in 2018. Kampung Biru Arema is Malang’s own Blue-Village, inspired by Chefchaouen in Morroco and Santorini in Greece.
Malang’s Mayor, Mochammad Anton commissioned Kampung Biru Arema because the other rainbow villages had done a fantastic job at stimulating the economy in the slums where previously job prospects were scarce. In addition to charging an admission fee, the local residents sell goods to tourists, and teenagers are also given jobs managing the street parking.
Prices & Entrance Fees
The entrance fee to Kampung Warna-Warni is only about 3K IDR (21 cents USD), but all of the villages and the bridge charge separate fees, so remember to bring cash! Parking is an additional 3k IDR, even if you’re just getting picked up. The villages all charge separately because the entrance fees go directly to benefiting that specific community.
