Getting (Sexy) Pictures Taken at Kanto Lampo Waterfall With the Best Photographer in Bali

Hmmm…. Isn’t visiting a waterfall just to get sexy pictures taken oh so Bali? It’s completely emblematic of what all the keyboard warriors in Expat Facebook groups say has gone “wrong” with the island lately. And yet, getting model-like shots at Kampo Lampo waterfall has become a not-to-miss activity drawing in hundreds and even thousands of tourists per day. Now, the small and comparatively unimpressive Kanto Lampo draws in far more tourists than the other much larger waterfalls in the area – The people have voted on what they want, and sexy waterfall pictures are here to stay.

Guide to where to stay in Bali from someone who lives there: All the best places for your first visit!

What to Expect
Kanto Lampo is located at the base of a steep ravine – on one side of the gorge is the waterfall, and on the other side, you can do a short hike (5 minutes) to a viewing platform. There’s also a sacred cave on the side opposite the waterfall, but we found it underwhelming. Kanto Lampo is unique looking – it’s all harsh tumbling grey rock rather than lush jungle like the other waterfalls. It looks like it might be more at home in Iceland rather than Bali.
Most Instagrammable Waterfall in Bali
While the waterfall is beautiful in its own right, 90% of visitors come to Kanto Lampo for one reason: to take photos on the now Insta-famous rock formation at the base of the falls. Because it’s mainly a photo spot, the falls only have 1-2 people on them at a time. It’s probably a good thing that this waterfall is mainly being used as a picture backdrop instead of a swimming spot because even though Kanto Lampo is impressive-looking, it’s tiny.

Bali’s Most Famous Photographer
The tour guides in Bali are known for going above and beyond to help tourists get the perfect vacation shot, but the tour guides at Kampo Lampo are next level. There’s one guide (I apologize for not knowing his name) who is super into his job and shows you how to post to get the angles for the photo by mimicking the pose himself. The man has a talent for photography and I can’t believe he still just works for tips after an Instagram reel of his passionate photo direction went mega-viral and he’s now a bit of a Bali celebrity.
Tip: Kanto Lampo is a great place to take couples/ engagement pics! We saw some people doing that while we were there .
You Can Kinda Sorta Go Swimming
The pool at the base of Kanto Lampo only comes up to knee height, so even though most people take pics in bikinis at the falls, you can’t actually go swimming there. There is a small man-made pool next to the waterfall that’s more like a dunking tank if you want to take a dip – do know the water is freezing cold!
Waiting in Line for the Pics
Kanto Lampo used to be a bit of a hidden gem, but since it blew up on Instagram, travelers report waiting in lines for up to 3 hours to get their picture taken there. Listen, it’s a good photo, but I wouldn’t wait that long for any waterfall! I recommend going as early in the morning as possible, around 7-8 AM, to beat these crazy lines.

What Else to Do in the Area
If you’re looking for other attractions to do in the area, I recommend going waterfall-hopping. There’s a ton in the area – the most popular is Tibumana Waterfall, which also has an Insta-famous road leading up to it called “Adilla’s Spot” that’s worth a stop-by. I enjoyed visiting Goa Rang Reng Waterfall, which is located right next to Kanto Lampo and gets far fewer tourists than the more popular spots.
