About Katie: I’ve been based in Bali for the past three years and I’ve traveled all over Indonesia’s Outer Islands.

🏆 1) Ubud: Bali’s Cultural Capital, Known for Serenity, Ricefields, Yoga, and Treehouses

Ubud is Bali’s Cultural capital – Surrounded by beautiful rice fields, waterfalls, and temples – Ubud is uniquely Bali. I lived in Ubud for around 6 months over the past two years, so I might be a little bit biased when I say I think Ubud is the overall best place to stay in Bali. The most famous tourist attraction in Ubud is the Tirta Empul Water Temple, where you can do Balinese purification rituals. In the center of town, there’s also the world-famous Ubud Monkey Forest, which is an animal sanctuary for Balinese Macaques that have been pushed out of their natural habitat due to development on the island.

Ubud has become known in recent years for its spiritual community, so if you’re inclined towards yoga, reiki, healing rituals, et all, Ubud is your place! The combining ideologies present have also lent themselves to the food – You can get any manner of raw, vegan, and holistic dishes, as well as absolutely fantastic Balinese and Western Fare, at one of the many cafes.

Ubud is Bali’s Cultural Capital. Please enjoy my non-touristy local’s guide to spending one fantastic day.

There’s also some fun adventure tourism available in Ubud, for example, you can go on a high swing over the rice fields, go white water rafting on the Telaga Waja or Agung Rivers, and even go adventure ATV riding through waterfalls (my personal favorite!). Although Ubud doesn’t have a beach, it’s also been rivaling Canggu & Seminyak’s famous Beach clubs by building Pool Clubs like Cretya and Omma that have absolutely insane infinity pools overlooking Ubud’s ricefields and waterfalls.

2) Canggu: Younger Crowd With Big Parties, Surfing, High-End Cafes, and Lots of Fun!

Canggu is Bali’s premier party town full of young backpackers and Digital Nomads all looking for a good time by the beach. 20 years ago Canggu was just a sleepy fishing village that was popular with surfers, but now it’s one of the not-to-miss locations in Bali. Due to the fact it was developed relatively recently, Canggu is full of cafes, hostels, beach clubs, and bars that are hipster-trendy and more appealing to Millenials and Gen Z than the neighboring towns of Kuta and Seminyak. I’ve described Canggu Cafes as looking and feeling as if the vibe of DUMBO, Brooklyn, was somehow transported to Bali. It’s a very young, fun, and stylish vibe in Canggu.

3) Kintamani: Mountainous Area of Bali, Amazing Hot Springs, Volcano Trekking, and Stunning Views

Kintamani is an incredible area of Bali that first rose to popularity specifically for hiking Mt. Batur for sunrise above the clouds. Mt. Batur is considered the best thing to do in Kintamani, as well as being one of the best volcanoes in Bali overall. In the wake of the tremendous popularity of this hike, other businesses in the area started popping up – and now Kintamani is a tourist destination worth spending a few days in its own right. In addition to the awe-inspiring views you get from climbing Mt. Batur’s Caldera, there are hotels, spas, and cafes set up with the perfect view of the volcano.

One of these cafes with absolutely insane views of Mt. Batur Volcano is a Starbucks, which owns the title of the “Most Beautiful Starbucks in the Entire World”. There are also natural wonders in Kintamani like their volcanic hot springs – And while the public hot springs in Kintamani don’t have the best reviews, when I visited recently our hotel had a private hot spring set up for the guests that was magical

Climbing Mount Batur for sunrise is an essential part of any trip to Bali.

4) Komodo Islands + Flores: Live Aboard Cruises, Awe-Inspiring Tropical Nature, Scuba Diving, Luxury

Komodo National Park is the crown jewel of Indonesian travel destinations. While it’s a little difficult to get to Komodo from Bali because you need to take a short flight to reach the port city of Labuan Bajo, it’s well worth it. Komodo National Park is comprised of an archipelago of around 30 small islands, each with their own unique nature and attractions. The most popular way to visit the Komodo Islands is by taking a multi-day island-hopping Komomodo boat tour.

There are many different Komodo Islands boat tour options, some are ultra-luxury private charters with liveaboard chefs, and others are suitable for a backpacker’s budget, where everyone sleeps on mats on the floor. In addition to Komodo National Park, there are a ton of things to do in Flores. You can visit the picturesque Wae Rebo Traditional Village, or embark on a multi-day trek of Kelimutu Volcano.

5) Uluwatu: Cliff-Side Beaches, Surfing, High-End, Relaxed

Located at Bali’s most southern tip, Uluwatu is the new ex-pat and surfer darling on the island. Known for having far better beaches than the old reigning tourist favorites; Canggu, Seminyak, and Kuta, Uluwatu also has the added wow factor of cliff-side views. In addition to its great beaches, surfing, and views, Uluwatu also has much less traffic congestion than other popular areas of Bali. Most roads in Uluwatu are wide, open, and new – Thanks to recent development in the area.

The downside of Uluwatu is that it’s quite small compared to how popular it is, and things tend to book up fast. Hotels in Uluwatu are on another level, with the Bulgari Resort taking the lead. The Bulgari in Uluwatu is known for having an elevator that cuts through the jungle down to its private beach. If you’re looking for things to do in Uluwatu, it’s home to some of the most iconic activities in Bali. The world-famous beach club Savaya, which is known for its cube bar overhanging the Indian Ocean, is located in Uluwatu – As is the astounding Kecak Fire Show.

6) North Bali: Pristine & Untouched Nature, Amazing Activities

North Bali is still known as the “Real Bali” due to its relatively untouched waterfalls, rice fields, and nature. Despite all it has to offer, North Bali doesn’t get nearly as many visitors as the South of the island – This is because it’s a little bit difficult to get to the North since it’s a 3-4 hour drive from Denpasar Airport. But, with fewer tourists comes less traffic, overtourism, and pollution – and more peace and tranquility. If you’re looking for some interesting activities for your trip to Bali, you’ll find some of the best in the North. From swimming with the dolphins in Lovina, to scuba diving a shipwreck in Amed – North Bali has adventure activities in droves.

7) Gili Islands: 3 Islands to the East of Bali Known For Beautiful Beaches

The Gilis, consisting of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are three absolutely stunning tiny islands located a 2-hour boat ride from Bali. On the Gili Islands, You’ll find beautiful white sand and blue water beaches. Notably, cars and motorbikes aren’t allowed on the Gili Islands, which gives travelers a break from Bali’s relentless traffic. Instead of driving scooters like they do in Bali, travelers on the Gilis can ride bicycles or horses to get around.

Each of the Gili islands is known for a specific vibe they offer

  • Gili Trawangan(T) – Party, young, largest of the three Gilis
  • Gili Meno – Romantic honeymoon island
  • Gili Air – Peaceful, small expat community

Kelingking Beach Nusa Penida

8) Nusa Islands: 2 Islands to the South of Bali Known for Picturesque Views

The Nusas are two islands located to the south of Bali that are known for their iconic and picturesque views. In fact, most of the well-known Bali photo spots are actually located on Nusa Penida Island, not Bali! While Nusa Penida has some absolutely out-of-this-world beaches and views, the main spots get very crowded during the daytime due to tourists coming in from Bali for a sightseeing day trip. If you’re not a fan of the crowds, the neighboring island of Nusa Lembongan will be the one for you. Nusa Lembongan is a quieter island that’s starting to become popular with expats. Both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida have fantastic beaches, with blue water and white sand. The Nusa islands used to be completely off-the-beaten-path, but have been developed rapidly in the past few years. Now you can expect well-paved roads, 4-star hotels, beach clubs, and all manner of cafes on both of the islands.

9) Seminyak: Ultra-Luxury Travel Hub on Bali’s West Coast With 5-Star Hotels & Beach Clubs

Seminyak is a completely developed beach-front area between Kuta and Canggu on Bali’s West Coast. Being on the West Coast, Seminyak gets the best jaw-dropping sunsets in Bali. Tending to draw an older and more sophisticated crowd than neighboring Canggu and Kuta, Seminyak is known for 4-star hotels, luxurious beach clubs, restaurants, bars, and shopping. The nightlife in Seminyak is also on another level – Seminyak has some of the best premier clubs on the island, with La Favela and Mexicola’s Latin-inspired scene being the creme-de-la-creme. If you’re looking for a good beach club, Seminyak is also home to the famous Potato Head Beach Club, Ku De Ta, and Mrs. Sippy.

10) Nusa Dua: Peaceful Beach Destination on Bali’s East Coast, Good for Families

Nusa Dua, on Bali’s southeast coast opposite Uluwatu, is popular with families, couples, and anyone looking for a more tranquil side of Bali.  It’s a beachy, relaxing, and beautiful location with lots of resorts and long-term expats. In Nusa Dua, there’s little of the chaotic traffic that has become synonymous with Bali, and instead, you can enjoy wide, open streets leading to gated communities and tidy resorts.

11) Kuta: Original Travel Hub in Bali, Where the Main Airport is Located

Kuta is a beach-front town located right next to Bali’s main airport, Ngurah Rai International Airport. Due to its beach-front location and proximity to the airport, Kuta is an old-school Bali favorite. Nowadays, Kuta is known for its rowdy party scene and beaches, where you can go surfing. While Kuta isn’t my favorite place in Bali, it does have some good elements. For example, Kuta is one of the best places to go shopping in Bali. You can find the same thing for sale at markets in Ubud and Canggu for sale in Kuta for 1/3 the price, and Kuta is also home to some of the best malls in Bali.

✔️ Kuta Pros

✅ Right next to Denpasar International Airport
✅ Great shopping malls and sunsets

ⓧ Kuta Cons

❌ Kinda grimy reputation
❌ Overdeveloped

👉 Things to do in Kuta

  • Surf – Located on Bali’s West Coast, Kuta has similar surfing beaches to Seminyak and Canggu.
  • Party – The OG party spot in Bali
  • Shop – Kuta has some of the cheapest shopping in all of Bali, in addition to the largest shopping malls with international brands.

12) Lombok: Lesser Developed Island East of Bali, Known for Surfing

Kuta Lombok is said to be what Bali was like 20 years ago. It’s a small sleepy beach town known for great surfing spots and a laid-back community full of good vibes. I was lucky enough to spend 3 months in Kuta Lombok when I was learning how to surf. Attending a surf camp in Kuta Lombok is one of the main attractions in the town, but there’s so much more to Kuta than just surfing. Quickly becoming the “New Bali”, Kuta Lombok is home to all types of accommodations ranging from fun backpackers hostels to 5-star hotels.
