Bikago Bali & Phuket Scooter Rental Service (REVIEW)

Bikago is a great scooter rental service for travelers going to Bali & Phuket. I live in Bali when I’m not traveling, and I recommend Bikago to anyone who plans on visiting different areas because the service provides pickup/dropoff anywhere on the island, while other bike rental services charge 500 IDR. Bikago also has a great airport dropoff service, and they include collision insurance with all their rentals.

🚨 Note!  I’m not being paid to promote Bikago – All of the opinions in this review are my own from using the service.

All About Bikago Scooter Rental Service

Bikago is an online scooter rental service that is filling a much-needed niche in Bali. Historically, people rent scooters from guys on the street or their hostel/hotel in Bali – There’s no oversight to this process.

Sometimes you’ll get a scooter that’s 20 years old, and you won’t find out until you’re on the road that there’s only one kickstand, other times your helmet will be broken (or you’ll get a bicycle helmet instead of a motorbike one!). Yes, all of these things (and many more) have happened to me renting scooters in Bali, Thailand, and the Philippines.

I’d like to say I was at least getting some amazing discounts for these sub-par cash-only services, but the rental rates are pretty much the same across the board.

That’s when I found out about Bikago – Bikago offers a competitive rate charged on the street, but for all brand-new bikes, they do drop off/pick up anywhere in Bali and include collision insurance for all of their rentals.

💳  You can get a physical IDP Delivered to your hotel or villa in Bali through Bikago in a few hours as long as you have an active driver’s license.

I think after so many years traveling in Bali SE Asia, Bikago is filling a much-needed niche. Up until this point, scooter rental services in SE Asia have just been cash-in-hand, with no protection, no insurance, and no oversight.

All this was fine, back when a scooter was expected to just kinda be a cheap old thing that got you from point A to point B, but now day rates for scooters are pretty expensive, and the fees if you damage one are even more so, with rental scams galore.

Since 2020, prices in Bali have been skyrocketing, it’s actually one of the biggest cons to living in Bali at the moment. If you’re interested in scooter rentals on a daily rate in Bali, it can frequently cost way more than bike services like Revel back in NYC (I’m comparing it to NYC because that’s where I’m from).

The thing is, Bali has a reputation for being “cheap”, but unless you’re renting at a monthly rate, I haven’t found that to be the case at all for scooter rental services in Bali in recent years.

Anything touristy in Bali is like this – For example, gyms in Ubud charge something like 300K ($21) for a day pass now, vs. 1,500,000 IDR ($100) for a monthly. This results in wayyyyyyy different prices for tourists, just here for a few days to a week, vs. long-term visitors, such as myself.

I don’t mean to sound like I’m complaining (because Bali is my favorite place in the world) but just know that day passes and day-rate rentals for things have just gone crazy.

Bikago, with its competitive (starting at 100K IDR or $7 per day) day-rate rentals, that also offer insurance through the service + insurance through your credit card, is filling a much-needed niche in Bali and Thailand.

Bikago doesn’t hold your passport hostage (like some rental services I’ve experienced in Thailand do), they do dropoff and pickup services to everywhere in Bali, and they give you actual functioning, not-broken, helmets.

Benefits of Using Bikago

✔️ Includes Insurance

This is the biggest bonus for renting through Bikago vs. some guy off the street. Bikago includes complete insurance for their rentals, meaning if you crash it (even if it’s wrecked), or if it gets stolen, you’re only on the hook for a deductible. I was charged a higher fee than the current Bikago deductible when I just scratched my bike in Thailand, so I think this is a great benefit.

✔️ Accepts Credit Card Payment

This is a big one! I have a travel credit card that covers theft, which comes in handy for rental services. I found out really quickly how amazing getting that kind of coverage and protection can be when my rental was stolen on my first day renting a bike in Tulum, Mexico. Unfortunately, since I paid for my rental in cash instead of being able to use my credit card, I didn’t have any anti-theft protection and had to pay an exorbitant amount for the bike replacement.

✔️ Pickup / Dropoff Anywhere in Bali

That’s right – You can get your bike from ANYWHERE on the island. I can’t stress enough how amazing this is for those traveling Bali. Bali is not a tiny island – It takes something like 5 hours to drive from the South to the North or East-West. Previously, if you rented your scooter in Ubud and wanted to drive it to Canggu, for example, you would have to pay a big fat fee to your rental company to get them to come and get it from your new location.

Not with Bikago!

They do drop and pick up from anywhere in Bali, meaning if you’re all the way in Lovina swimming with the dolphins you can still get a scooter.

✔️ Airport Pickup

I got my Bikago bike with airport pickup and it was a completely stress-free process. When I arrived, someone was waiting with my name on a sign in the airport waiting area, who walked me to the scooter parking and helped me with my bags! A+ service.

✔️ No “Foreigner Price” – Set Prices

Bikago has set prices posted on their website for all the different scooter variations you could want. I know some people love haggling, but it’s nice to just see a price rather than have to intervene down someone every time you want a scooter!

You can rent scooters with board racks through Bikago

✔️ Customizable Options

If you want a scooter with a surfboard rack, you can get that, if you want a specific color or motor CC, you can choose that too. Using Bikago and being able to see online inventory is wayyyyy easier than if you needed a scooter with a board rack, and had to drive all over Bali to find a shop that had it in stock.

✔️ Reputation

So many scooter rentals and helmets I’ve gotten have been delivered a little broken, and I only realized it after setting off on my bike. This is because these word-of-mouth and cash-only rental services don’t have to worry about a bad review for delivering poor-quality service. However, if you use an online brand like Bikago that depends on positive reviews, you know you can expect better service and higher-quality rentals.

✔️ Includes First-Aid Kit

✔️ Bikago Has Premium Scooters

Vespa scooters are all the rage currently in Bali, with very few rental services offering them. Most rental services I’ve seen only offer Scoopys, Varios, Nmax, and Xmax scooters – Bikago in Bali also has these + more premium options. Bikago not only offers premium scooter rentals but also lets you request which color you want!
